The Power of Comprehensive Pilates Certification
Jul 30, 2024We've all heard about the magic of Pilates – improved flexibility, strength, and overall well-being. But as a Mat or Reformer-Certified instructor, you might encounter unique challenges among your clients, such as pregnancy, disc herniations, knee replacements, age-related limitations, or simple deconditioning.
That's when you realize that the 'one-size-fits-all' approach of the group class model falls short in addressing diverse client needs.
Trust me, it’s a common experience for many instructors who start with Mat or Reformer Certification . . . especially if they began teaching as a hobby or a side job.
However, if you dream of turning Pilates into a full-fledged career and create meaningful, lasting transformations in your clients’ bodies, you need more than just the basics. That’s where comprehensive Pilates certification comes into play.
Think of it this way: Pilates instructors are like skilled craftsmen or contractors. They must have the right tools to tackle various tasks. A carpenter without a hammer can't drive in a single nail, and a painter without a paintbrush can't add color to a canvas. Similarly, for Pilates instructors, specific apparatuses are the tools that allow them to cater to different client needs.
Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, understood the importance of having a variety of tools to address diverse needs. He invented apparatuses like the Reformer, Trapeze Table/Cadillac, Guillotine, and Wunda Chair — not as fancy gym equipment, but as essential tools for Pilates instructors to help individuals with specific situations. Just as a carpenter needs a hammer and a painter needs a paintbrush, a Pilates instructor needs a comprehensive set of apparatuses to work effectively with clients. For example, if you want to work on spine mobility, your best choice would be a round apparatus, like the small or large barrel.
Pilates promises to help anybody, but you need to know how to use all the equipment to make that promise a reality. Like a power drill that makes your job easier, having the right apparatus can help you achieve specific results in the body. The Trapeze Table, for example, is my go-to apparatus for older clients or those with rather significant mobility limitations. The height of the table is perfect so people can get up and down without a problem and the stable (unmoving) surface helps with that, too.
In the early stages of my Pilates journey, I started (like many others) with a Mat certification. I taught countless classes, learned an abundance of Pilates techniques, and became an expert at modifying exercises to suit different needs. However, there were situations where my knowledge and skills fell short because I didn't have access to the right tools. Unfortunately, this limitation caused some of my clients to leave because I couldn't provide them with the help they needed.
That's why I'm a firm believer in the power of comprehensive Pilates certification. It equips you with the full array of tools necessary to make a real impact in the lives of your clients. Comprehensive certification enables you to adapt and customize exercises to suit the unique needs of each individual, ensuring that you can help everybody (and every BODY) who walks through your studio doors.
So, if you're passionate about making Pilates your lifelong career and dedicated to creating positive, lasting changes in people's lives, comprehensive certification is the path to take. It's the key to unlocking your full potential as a Pilates instructor and offering your clients the best possible experience.
Remember, Pilates is all about progress, and continuous learning is a big part of that. So, go out there, get comprehensively certified, and become the best Pilates practitioner you can be. Your clients will thank you . . . and you'll be amazed at the incredible transformations you can help them achieve.
