Group vs Individual Pilates Classes: Which One is Right for You?

pilates 101 Mar 08, 2025

When starting your Pilates journey, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to join a group class or invest in individual sessions.

Both options offer incredible benefits, but the right choice depends on your goals, learning style, and personal needs. So let’s take a few minutes to break down the key differences and benefits of each one. That way you can make the best choice for you and your body.

The Energy of Group Classes

One of the main draws of group classes for many people is that they bring a sense of community, energy, and fun to your Pilates practice. You’ll be moving alongside others, which can be motivating and inspiring.

These classes often bring consistency to your practice and help you gradually develop your skills in a supportive environment.

Another big advantage of group classes is their affordability. Since the cost is shared among multiple participants, it’s a more budget-friendly way to access expert instruction.

Plus, the social aspect can keep you accountable — when you know your classmates are showing up, it’s easier to stay committed.

However, group classes do have limitations. For one, the instructor is guiding multiple people at once, so individualized attention is limited, especially if there are a lot of people in the class.

With that in mind, if you have specific injuries, movement limitations, or unique goals, you may not receive the tailored feedback you need in a group setting.

Additionally, the pace of the class is set for the group, so if you need extra time to master a movement, you may have to modify on your own . . . or, let’s be real, just push through and ignore your body’s signals. And while that might feel like the right thing in the moment, it’s not exactly a recipe for progress (or feeling good later).

The Personalization of Individual Sessions

Individual Pilates sessions offer a completely customized experience! Your instructor tailors each session to your specific body, needs, and goals, ensuring you get the most effective and safe workout possible.

If you have injuries, chronic pain, or specific movement limitations, individual sessions can help you build confidence and learn how to modify exercises appropriately . . . for your body.

Individual sessions are also ideal if you’re looking to fast-track your progress. With one-on-one attention, you’ll refine your technique, deepen your understanding of Pilates, and correct movement patterns that might go unnoticed in a group setting. It’s an investment in learning how to move efficiently and effectively.

The main downside? Cost.

Individual sessions are more expensive than group classes, which can make them less accessible for some people. However, taking even a few individual sessions can make a significant impact, helping you build a solid foundation before transitioning into group classes with more confidence.

Which One is Best for You?

If you know me, you know that I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. With that being said, there’s no way I can tell you which one is the best fit for you. The right choice depends on your personal goals and circumstances.

If you’re injury-free, enjoy the energy of a group, and are looking for a cost-effective way to practice Pilates, group classes might be your perfect fit.

On the other hand, if you have specific needs, are recovering from an injury, or want highly personalized instruction, individual sessions will give you the focused attention you need.

And here’s the best part — there’s no rule that says you have to choose just one! Many people benefit from a combination of both.

You can start with a few individual sessions to learn the fundamentals, then transition into group classes.

Or you can take group classes regularly and schedule occasional individual sessions to fine-tune your technique. It’s all about finding what works best for you!

So don’t be afraid to explore, experiment, and listen to your body. At the end of the day, the best Pilates practice is the one that keeps you moving, engaged, and feeling your best.
